Art of Success (2023)

What does it take to be a successful artist? There are various answers to this question: experience, talent, time, scandalousness, etc.

This project is dedicated to the study of the artist's career path. Using a neural network, images were generated and painted by a robot to display the non-physical components of the artist's professional success.

Let's try to see how a non-human artist will answer this question: a duet of a robot and a neural network.

TALENT

Component 1.

But somebody would argue. Talent - is not always necessary to succeed in the art world. Sometimes money and connections are enough.

RECOGNIZABLE ART STYLE

Component 2.

The uniqueness of an artistic style is directly proportional to its recognition and commercial success in the media. Even those who are not well-versed in art can distinguish between Van Gogh and Dali due to the vast differences in their styles and themes.

FRIENDS IN THE ART WORLD

Component 3.

When I asked people about the criteria for artist success, it was clear that having connections played a significant role. Many successful artists had friendships with other well-known artists, musicians, or gallerists. This is not surprising as these relationships can provide valuable opportunities and exposure.

The picture that has been generated appears to depict two women, which is ironic considering the current state of the art market where female artists are unfortunately underrepresented.

EXPERIENCE

Component 4.

Experience is an important part of any process. Whether an artist can become successful without any artistic practice is the question.

BEING SCANDALOUS

Component 5.

A major scandal in any field will help to win the attention of the media. Some artists have used scandalous behavior to challenge societal norms and provoke conversations, leading to greater visibility and impact on their art.
